The Transportation Corps' Growing Role in Combat Support in the Global War on Terror (GWOT)
In this presentation, Major General James Chambers talks about the Transportation Corps’ growing role in combat support in the Global War on Terror (GWOT).
The responsibility of the United States Army’s Transportation Corps spreads across all commands and all levels of the force structure. Their role in combat support is critical to mission success, especially at the operational level in the combatant theatres. The millions of miles logged in both Iraq and Afghanistan have exposed the Transportation Corps to all aspects of combat-related incidents involving direct fire and indirect fire in the form of IEDs and EFPs.
Convoy operations have grown exponentially in the last eight years of combat operations, with the Transportation Corps leading the way. From the restructuring of their MTOE to the increased mobility operations across both the water and sky, the Transportation Corps has become critical to the success in the Global War on Terror (GWOT). The improvements they have made from basic training to pre-mobilization have increased soldier survivability in theatre and counter IEDs.
Modeling and Simulation have become key instruments and platforms for instruction and the training of all soldiers within the corps. From the HMMWV Egress Assistance Trainer (HEAT) to the Virtual Combat Convoy; the implementations of simulators have saved millions of dollars in fuel while providing real-world scenarios to deploying units. Their incorporation of key vehicles such as the JLTV, M915-A5 and the HEMTT-A4 have also contributed to the success overseas and the continued combat logistical support needed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Major General James Chambers speaks of the great strides the Transportation Corps have made in recent years and the successes they look to achieve in combat support incorporating both the National Guard and Reserves in the near future.
The Ministry of Defence and ABRO: Military Support and Combat Operations
Listen as Lieutenant Colonel Derek Hull delves into the unique relationship between the ABRO and Ministry of Defence. Idea sharing within the military machine and the private sector can be a daunting task; however, Lt. Col. Hull explains the tight knit partnership between these two Ministries. He also talks about his first-hand in-theatre experiences between ABRO/BAE land systems and the Army. Lt. Col. Hull explains how the intricacies of the Ministries support chains and sustain the large vehicle fleets in the Army and Marines. The long-term partnering between the two bodies in their efforts to maintain and repair is unlike any other private/defence partnership. Lt. Col. Hull also touches on case studies of successes and lessons learned in combat operations and combat service support in an operational environment.
Colonel Bill Haight talks about the US Army Corps of Engineers in Iraq and Afghanistan
The United States Army Corps of Engineers has taken on a new role in the Global War on Terror, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have been forced to take on new responsibilities in difficult environments to assist the war fighters from all of the military services in combat.
Operation Iraqi Freedom has shown the diverse abilities of American combat engineers. The ongoing developments in theatre have tasked the Army engineers forward deployed who are engaged in combat services and combat services support. Stability operations have focused the military on the rebuilding Iraq and stabilizing of the Iraqi infrastructure.
The civil support missions that have been tasked to the Army Corps of Engineers have been seen across a broad spectrum of rebuilding and stabilizing efforts in Iraq. One of the huge undertakings of the USACE is the rebuilding of critical infrastructure such as road networks, airports, railways and critical power grids has been. Their integration with other commands such as Army Material Command USAID and Civil Affairs is also integral to the rebuilding in Iraq.
Col. Haight discuses the shift in focus to Afghanistan has also become a focal point for combat engineers in all of the armed forces. The stability and reconstruction operations for rebuilding Afghanistan have created a METL for tasks to be completed both long term and short term in all provincial Afghanistan reconstruction efforts.
